About the UX Knowledge Base

The UX Knowledge Base (UXKB) is a public collection of user experience (UX) design concepts — patterns, principles, processes, and standards — organized so they're easy to browse, search, and cite when a design decision needs backing.

What is included

The UX Knowledge Base collects concepts across visual design, content, navigation, personalization, customer service, trust, and more, along with the entities and sources those concepts draw on — real sites, researchers, and standards bodies cited as worked examples. Each entry explains what the concept is, why it matters, and where it's been put into practice, so it can be dropped into a design review or a write-up as a ready reference rather than something to re-research from scratch.

Why we created the UXKB

Good UX guidance is scattered across books, papers, and institutional memory, and it's easy to lose track of why a given practice matters or where the evidence for it comes from. The UX Knowledge Base exists to bring that guidance into one consistently structured place — a shared, linkable vocabulary for design conversations, so recommendations can point to a definition and its rationale instead of relying on tribal knowledge.

How we source content

The UX Knowledge Base draws primarily on The Design of Sites, a book co-authored by one of fuguUX's founders, along with material that's in the public domain or carries a license that explicitly allows derivative and commercial use — Creative Commons licenses like CC BY-SA, and open-source licenses like Apache 2.0 or MIT. We don't ingest source material that lacks one of these licenses; where a relevant but copyrighted source exists, we point to it in a "Further Reading" note instead of drawing from it directly. See the FAQ for the full breakdown of what's sourced from where and how each concept page cites its sources.

The structure itself follows Andrej Karpathy's idea of an LLM-maintained wiki that compounds as sources are added — updating existing pages, cross-linking related concepts, and flagging contradictions — rather than re-deriving answers from scratch each time. We use Claude to draft and maintain pages this way; humans curate the source material and review the result.
