Key points

  • Affordances, adapted for interface design by Don Norman from The Design of Everyday Things, are action possibilities readily perceivable by users; well-designed objects offer visual clues to their own operation (a door knob affording turning, a hammer handle affording a particular grip).
  • A resort door handle so unclear that the resort had to add a sign explaining how to use it — a concrete case of a signifier failing badly enough to need a text explanation as a fallback.
  • Knurling — the small ridges found on knobs — increases grip friction and affords gripping with the fingers; a classic physical-affordance example.
  • Older Microsoft Windows added small ridges to window corners specifically to visually mimic physical knurling, leveraging real-world knowledge to signify a resize handle in a digital interface with no physical texture to draw on.
  • A flat-design comparison: plain text reading “Here” gives no indication it’s clickable, while the same word inside a colored button with an icon and a directional arrow makes it obvious — flat design’s removal of “visually unappealing” pixels (shadows, borders, gradients) is also the removal of the very cues that signify what’s interactive.
  • A calendar-event screenshot (an Android flat-design interface) where the close (×) button is somewhat apparent but a GPS pin icon is also clickable (opening Google Maps) with nothing to suggest this — the same false-negative affordance failure already documented from this screenshot’s reuse in a separate post about the Stroop effect.
