Key points
- Four guiding principles structure the method: context (conducting the session in the user’s actual workplace, discussing real artifacts and past events), partnership (researcher and user collaborate to understand the work, alternating between observation and discussion), interpretation (the researcher shares their developing understanding with the user mid-session so it can be corrected on the spot), and focus (the researcher steers discussion toward what the project actually needs, rather than a fully open-ended conversation). - A session runs roughly two hours across three phases: an introduction (permissions, confidentiality, a work overview, identifying specific tasks to observe), a body (observation interleaved with discussion, captured via handwritten notes), and a wrap-up (a summary given back to the user, with a chance to correct it).
- Findings are consolidated in a separate interpretation session, where 3–8 team members hear the interview retold and build shared work models or affinity diagrams from it — distinct from the field visit itself.
- Sample size scales with scope: as few as 4 users for a single small task, up to 30 or more for a broad inquiry.
- Advantages and the main limitation: reveals tacit knowledge users can’t articulate unprompted and produces detailed real-work data that’s hard to obtain any other way, at the cost of being resource-intensive (site travel plus substantial interpretation time per session).
- Contextual inquiry is the data-gathering component of Beyer and Holtzblatt’s broader Contextual Design methodology (developed 1988–1992), which uses it to build the models that later inform personas and design decisions.
