  • Definition. Usability engineering draws on computer science and psychology to identify usability problems, rather than to design solutions for them — a usability engineer’s focus is the research/testing phase; finding the actual fix is the job of a UX or interaction designer.
  • History. In 1988, John Whiteside (Digital Equipment Corporation) and John Bennett (IBM) published work isolating three key activities: early goal-setting, iterative evaluation, and prototyping. Jakob Nielsen‘s 1993 book Usability Engineering became the field’s defining text, describing methods for testing throughout a product’s development — checking for barriers to learnability, efficiency, memorability, error-free use, and subjective satisfaction before launch — and coining the term “usability engineering lifecycle.”
  • International standards. ISO 9241 part 11 defines usability operationally as the effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction with which specified users can achieve specified goals in a specified context of use. NIST’s Common Industry Specification for Usability and biometrics usability specs apply the same idea in U.S. industry contexts.
  • Errors: slips vs. mistakes. A two-part taxonomy of human error: a slip is the right goal executed via the wrong action (a typo, clicking the wrong menu item — an automatic-behavior failure); a mistake is a consciously deliberated but wrong goal in the first place. A mode error is a dangerous slip subtype where a user acts correctly for the mode they think they’re in but is actually in a different one — designers mitigate this with modeless interfaces or with a quasimode that’s only active while a key or button is held down (e.g. holding Space to pan in Photoshop), so releasing it automatically exits.
  • Evaluation methods. Names card sorting, cognitive task analysis, cognitive walkthroughs, Contextual Inquiry, focus groups, heuristic evaluation, interviews, questionnaires, surveys, and usability testing — see Usability Evaluation Methods for how these combine in practice — alongside the RITE method (Rapid Iterative Testing and Evaluation), which fixes problems and reruns tests within the same study rather than waiting for a full round to finish.
